Thunders V/s All4One

Living upto the name "Thunders", the team complimented the Rain and Storm which was part of the reduced pre-QF game played on the Centrville ground. We roarded, and we poured our hearts out in this convincing win, washing out the opponent and marching onto the QF's.

It was a good toss to lose as our opponents helped us by opting to bat first in the wet conditions; which are more favourable to bowl than to bat on. Maybe All4One wanted to play its strength and put a hold onto the reduced 15 over match by blasting out and put us in pressure chasing in the difficult conditions. But; that was not to be, with all 11 of ours players showing how the fielding can change results (instead of only ball and bat). This team is rising as a high quality fielding unit with the inspirational Sujay in the centre always raising the standards laid for all the rest. We were diving, catching and converting all the chances to Run-outs whenever there was a one. There was a 100% rate in catching and there were 3 run-outs with some amazing throws from the deep and some direct throws which never let the opponents breathe easy. Bowling was on the money, and with no extras given; All4one batsmen were always in pressure and had to work hard for any run. The team wrapped them up on a low score of 42 which was never enough for 15 overs unless there was a total collapse of our batting (which is not new to us also :-)) ).

But that did not happen and Kruttik opened the batting with some fast scoring helped by number of wides, and in moments we were 18 odd in 2 overs without loss. All4one did get some inroad with 3 quick wickets after that but with runs always coming the score was reached comfortably with everyone chipping in and Sujay taking the score to the end with a blasting 4 to reach the final runs, as if making a statement of dominance in the complete match.

It was a team effort that I would love to see everytime we walk onto the field and I take my hats off to every team member who played his part to full potential. It was a day when it never felt like that we could lose and that's exactly what we have to take forward from here. We are back in QF and this time we have to break the jinx of not going to the latter stages.

In the end I can thank all the team members for being a little biased to hand over the MOM trophy to me. To say the least that could have been given to all 11 on this day.

Thunders V/S IMF

It was a match within a match, with thunders already qualified for the knock-out stage the target was to win with a margin which would take us to the top of the team tally and automatically qualify us for a bye in pre-QF. Maybe calculations were wrong but we were supposed to score the target set by IMF in 15 overs......that we did only to finally know that 3 other teams did better and beat us to the top rank.

This win was smooth but not as subtle as it sounds in the above few lines. The struggle for our team started again with the collection of 11 players. Kalyan must be thinking, why me since I have taken over as captain of this team. Anyway all these times he has still managed to bring together a group who have been able to overcome their skill shortfalls with their passion and effort on the field. I want to start with the department of fielding which in a way has changed the outlook of the team with impeccable ground and catching effort. Bowlers look better even after straying with their line and length in the last 2 matches because of the make up by the effort on the field. Sujay not only fields like a champion but also makes others try harder with his presence and efforts (except Kalyan who still needs to bend down for stopping the ball ...but being a captain wants to keep his head high....LOL...just joking...or am I ...!!!)

The IMF were never let out in the open and our bowling had them suffocated by not not giving easy runs. They were able to notch up 85 runs thanks to a brialliant innings by one of thoer players who held onto what he had.

It was upto batting to gather these runs in the least overs possible and the target in mind was 15 overs and not 20 overs to finish. Things did not start as we had hoped for and in trying to hurry up the batsmen were trying to hit every ball and not connecting. At that time with score on 20 odd after 8 overs, the mentality changed to just winning the match first and not losing direction totally. But that was not be and the boat was stabilized by ever reliable Sujay who has a temperament to match his skills. IMF was bowling good but Sujay had other things in mind. Without slogging he made sure the run chase is back on average with flurry of fours and sixes. Playing an awesome innings of 37 n.o. he took it to the end with Deepak hitting classic shots for 2 consecutive 4's of his own on the other end. We managed to get to the score in 14.4 overs with 7 wickets intact.

A convincing win indeed and one must appreciate everybody with sticking to whatever task they had in hand. League matches finish with impressive 3 of 3 wins..."Go Thunders "

Thunders V/s Metro Tigers : Fall tournament League Match # 2

Calls were being made till late in the night. Kalyan was trying to get 11 players for this match and was thinking of somehow patching a team together which was depleted from pullbacks by regular line players and hoard of injuries to others. Finally a team was gathered (literally) and with untested bowling line up hopes were rested on the Batting to click and put up a score that could be made a match out of.......and delivered they did !!! Outstanding batting performance by the team and everyone was happy that finally after long, the batting lived up to the expectations. All the batsmen chipped in with useful runs but special gem was the partnership between ever reliable Sujai and blaster Kartik whose innings was high due. Though the runs were coming in nice and regular, the real momentum builder was an over played for 21 runs by Kartik by hitting hard big sixes and we all new the score would be crossing the 120 mark we had set in our mind to defend.

Sujai was as usual impeccable and played wonderful innings with mix of agression and collection of singles. The icing on the cake was once in a blue moon innings by Gaurav who did not let the advantage slip up and hit some good shots to take the final score to 135.

Confident from the score we put up, the bowlers took from there and made sure they utilized the big cushion provided to them. Revelation was Kamesh , who was playing his first match with the team and managed to scalp 4 wickets. The bowlers; though bowled the opponents out for a meagre 70 odd score, it could not have been possible without the dazzling fielding effort from the team. Led and motivated by live-wire Sujay on the ground effort (who had a stupendous run out also...a la Rhodes...), all others raised their level of effort to put up a great fielding effort, and to make sure nothing was given away other than what batsmen have to work hard for. Some wonderful catching was seen and bowlers bad line and length was covered well by the fielding unit.

Bowlers do have lot of work to do and have to learn to keep their line through the 4 overs that they get (in fact around 25 odd were extras from the 70 runs, the opponents scored). The idea to keep in mind for every bowler is that everytime the fielders and luck will not be on your side and one has to focus more on what is required of each bowler for every ball.

There is a lot to take from this but this time around I am going to give a slack and not write about it. For once let everyone relish the win, and only enjoy the positives out of that match .... the negatives shall be reminded of when we all meet next !!! :-))

One more win can take us directly to the Quarters and everyone has to make winning his habit !

Thunders V/s 3C : 1st Fall League Match

And then it started....again !!!

Thunders started the Fall tournament and with it the quest to prove itself as a better team than what it was before. If you go by the way match went...this was certainly not the way how we can assert our claim to be better for sure.

Anand won the toss and as a golden rule for Fall conditions, chose to Bowl on the skidding Reston mat pitch. Bowlers made great use of the conditions and wrapped the 3C's batting line up with tight bowling and sharp fielding. The 3C could only give a target of 65 but which in the end was again made monumental with the now regular batting line up collapses. Again the lack of practice and temperamental issues plagued the team and wickets were lost to bad selection of shots and weakness of the mind.

Apart from the Stand between Sujai, who showed why he is respected in the team and Deepak, who is settling well into the team and position, the other batsmen could not stay at the wicket and in a flash we were 8 wickets down with still around 10 runs more to score for the win. In the end with able guidance from Sujai at one end, Gaurav (myself) managed to stay on the wicket and take it to the end.

It is high time our batting needs to show consistency and take it from here, as along the road now; this shall be more of a Batting Game rather than bowling. Next match 3rd Oct ...brace up!!!

Special mention for Bowlers : Gaurav(2 wkts), Anand(2 wkts) , Prabhu(1 wkt), Sujai(1 wkt), Gagan(1 wkt), Vijay(1 wkt) and Midhun(2 wkts) who were all among wickets and kept it tight for the other team till the end.

Bracing for the Fall Season set to start for our team on 19th Sep !!!! Wishing all the members of the team Best of Luck and hoping that this time we get to prove ourselves as better than we normally end performing. We have been a QF team and need to pull ourselves up in the performance and spirit.

Farewell party to the 4 Musketeers at Bombay Cafe , VA


Life is living in constant change !!!
This aspect of life is being higlighted in the recent past with lot happening for the team and its members. This post is to acknowledge these changes and at the same time make everyone aware of the things going on at present and what should we be looking for in the near future...

Adious Amigos :
We bid farewell to the "Fantastic Four" of our team : Pari , Prabhu , Narendra and Krishna on 29th August 2009. They have moved ahead with their lives and are getting into the working phase , a step ahead from the educational years. They had and shall always be a indispensible part of the team and we wish them all the very best in their lives and pray that they have a very bright future.

Partnerships :
A number of team members are also moving into the bond of marriages in the next 1-2 months and we hope that we do not lose them to the step they are moving to :-)) .....All team members wish them a happy life ahead and hope that they have a great bonded life ...LOL . Also take this opportunity to wish Kartik a hearty COngratulations on getting married recently.

Thunders V/S DCC

Another practice match was played on 15th Aug at Reston Cricket Ground with one of the good teams from the League and Thunders had to play a depleted team from their regular lineup....or should I say a new look team wiht some new blood being tested for the roster.

Anand as usual lost the toss but not the match with Thunders put in to bat. Batting top order did not click this time around with players getting out on regular intervals. Rahul stood on one end but was not supported by any top order batsmen on the other end and run rate was creeping with only 60 odd runs scored till 16 overs. However what was left half way by the top order was pulled back by the awesome batting of the so called tail order. Anand , Krishna and Midhun (who stood at one end from the middle order) hit massive sixes and fours to take the score to 103 in the end.

Bowling department did not disappoint and took the game away with some excellent spells from all of the bowlers and keeping the target always a wee bit away from the DCC batsmen. In the end match ended on a winning note with DCC falling short by around 10 runs in the end.

The things to take from the match were a lesson on temperament both in bowling at death ....which worked and for batting shot selection......which failed !!!

It was a good practice match and surely a insight into the teams depth and skill.

Thunders v/s VAS

Back to practice ....

Saw an innings from Parisheel which everyone waited for through the tournament, but came a wee bit late. It was an innings which had it all - grace , skill and aggression !!!
Thunders won the toss and elected to put up a score on the charts for VAS to chase. It could not have started better with Pari and Amit holding the innings to maybe the first 50+ runs opening stand this season. Pari showed why everybody has so much hopes from him, hitting the ball far and wide with exquisite shot selection. Amit played wonderfully for the opening stand giving Pari most of the strike. Akshay carried on the good work by standing tall with another useful partnership which could have taken us well past 175 with all the batting to come in. VAS however took the initiative away with some nice tight bowling and fielding effort. The middle order crumbled under bad shot selection and 150 also started looking a far thought with everybody playing in air and offering their wickets. Gaurav-2 (not me) and Midhun then took the last 3 overs nicely and did not let go of the oppurtunity to take us to final score of 149.
VAS took the field and did not let go of anything and scoring at every possible oppurtunity. Gaurav and Prabhu were tight in keeping the runs low in the intial overs bowled, but owing to the dropped catches, some sloppy fielding and n-number of extras the VAS made it a close match and played a fighting innings. In the end they fell short and were 140/8 at finish, however they surely reminded us that nothing is enough in this format of the game and we cannot let go of our guard even with such high totals.
The biggest highlight of the match was undoubtedly the innings of 85 by Pari under high heat, which is excellent for the team leading to the upcoming tournaments. We found some answers to the batting lineup but raised a few new questions on our bowling to the left handers. Sachin rightly said.....we need to make him bat more in the practice for him being left handed.....helping him along the way also....which he also needs !!!!!

Thunders v/s Patriots

Down but not out yet !!

Yes, this was the end of the road for this Spring League for Thunders with a loss in the hands of Patriots, who beat us for the second time in as many meetings in this tournament. Clearly it was not the ending any of us were hoping for, but that's how it is for now, and Patriots showed us why keeping a head on shoulders is important along with the skills of the game.
No doubt ours was a better team on cards, but like they say -- "You are as good as your Success"; we certainly fell short of expectations on the day.


We are a good team, who according to me need more direction than talent on how to bounce back from this exit and become an excellant team. Clearly the team has some exceptionally talented players in all departments of the game, but we all will also agree that we need a better plan of action for the excecution on the D-day.


It is amazing how a great fielding effort makes any bowling look great, and that is one thing this form of cricket needs more resources in. "We were very good on the field", that was my initial thought. But now if I think of it, we were good and not excellent like we should have been !! I am saying this because it certainly played a role in the final outcome of the match. Ground fielding was good but there were dropped catches also which stopped us from being excellent overall and could have eventually reduce their score by 15-20 runs and could have turned the tide.
In all it was a good effort by bowlers this season and they were mostly tidy, but surely every bowler needs to be more aware of his strengths rather than have conditions playing on thier minds.
Lot is desired from Batting since this department is for sure our strongest forte, but has failed us more often than it should. We have amazing talent in this department, but somehow it has not been exploited to its potential. The scores of 150+ are something what our batsmen are capable of but 80-90 on an average is where we are ending on. Brilliant innings by one makes a team decent but does not take you over the rope. More thought needs to be put in on who should be used and when and I am sure all of us must be thinking hard on what needs to be done.

Overall it was a good day of cricket on a very hot day. Our bowling kept them in ropes but could have done better if the catches were held onto, like the Patriot fielders. Batting started to fall apart with the top order batsmen failing and at one point we were 37/7 odd. Thanks to the wonderful innings by Farrokh that the final card showed us to be much respectful at 104 all out.

Though there is lot one can criticize but from where I see, this team had a good run and great fun through the tournament. Special thanks to Anand for making it all possible and make us all come together as a team. It is for him that we were able to get it all together, though he certainly needs to have better plans for finding winning combinations.

For sure we all need to sit together once before the new season and get more clarity on individual roles that are expected out of each.

The idea of playing was to have fun....and I am sure everybody including me had lot of it !!!

PRE-QF : Thunders v/s Warrangers

What could have been a cakewalk turned out to be a Roller-Coaster of a ride till the end of the match. Bringing to the fore that nothing comes easy in the Later stages. This match saw Thunders see-sawing from highs to low, and then Highs again to finally Cross the finishline in the end.

Seeing a damp mat Anand won the toss and rightfully elected to field; to make use of the skid in the mat that helps initially when wet. It was again a tidy performance with the bowl, which has been a balancing factor through the tournament. Keeping a tab on the extras was neccessary, and this time; learning from the last match it was indeed a tidier performance. The fielding effort again showed the spark it was missing in the match against the Badshahs, and there were some great catches and run-outs that were crucial in keeping the score in reins to 92 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs.

The Battting was not the dream start that we had hoped for;with all the batsmen performing well in the previous matches. The luck seemed to be eluding us with all the wrongs by us becoming wickets for the Warrangers, and before we could realize we were tatterring at 13 for 4 at one time. We had a long lineup but we were hoping to have somebody stay on the wicket. The ship was steadied by Sameer and Adi who both played brilliantly to take the score to well past 60 without any more hiccups. The later half was hurried more by a good knock from Farookh; who went in after Sameer got out trying to hit a loose ball for six. The match seemed in the bag with 8 required of the last three overs, but Farookh got out trying to finish the match early. What followed was not the best of Prabhu that we have seen in batting with him trying to hit every ball out of the park and not connecting any. The bowlers stuck to their line and what seemed to be over came out to be 4 required of 4 balls in the end.

The boundry was finally hit by Prabhu and the celebrations started with everybody running into the field. Special innings by Sameer, who was controlled yet aggresive, and Adi who played a steady chaceless innings rotating the strike and running good this time around.

Bowling effort should be praised for Kalyan , Akshaye , Prabhu , Anand and Gaurav who are doing well in tandem and making sure that Batting does not take all the pressure.

3 matches to win ....but it is a final everytime ...everymatch now !!!!

Thunders V/S Badshahs

This was a practice match played with the leading team in the league to get the required match practice for our team. It turned out that this match also highlighted some chinks in our Armour which will be useful if all the members of the team apply themselves accordingly and learn from there.
Like they say, "Mental toughness wins half the Game", turns out to be true now at the onset of the Knock-off stage, and this is where the playing XI will have to focus.
We lost this match but got a good feel of the conditions and quality of teams that we shall be facing from now in the tournament. Though we almost turned the match to our kitty, the spark in the team was missing right from the start. There were batting sparkles in the form of Adi, who played a wonderful innings but the overall team performance was low from the potential that is seen normally on the field.
This will surely give Anand and Kalyan to rethink and re-align a lot of things in the fielding positioning and batting order.

There is no way we want to lose from here, after all the hard work put in the league matches and dominating most part of it.

Thunders V/s MCC

This was the final League game for us and though the result would not have affected our qualification to the Knock-Out Stage (Pre-Quater Fnls) , it mattered to us that we stay on the top of the league like we had for the stretch of the tournament.
Situations swung from one to the other in this tightly contested match which ended in a loss for our team but brought out some goods in the team which should help in the later stages. One big positive was the performance of Farrokh with Bat who single handedly took our team from a position of desdain to something competitive for our worthy opponents MCC, who have a good team in them also.
It was one of those days for our batting line-up where whatever they were hitting was finding the fielders in the spot and not making mistakes also. The shots were hit nicely but somehow they ended in catches and having our team reeling 36/6 odd at one point. Adi and Farrookh took charge from there and in the end put up a respectable total of 94(all out) which we could fight for. And fought we did !!
We did not let MCC, which is undoubtedly no pushovers, have a ball in centre and had them by the ropes in the first 10 overs. Bowlers were keeping the pressure and fielding effort was matching to keep the opposition restricted to score with innovation and effort. At one point things were quite favourable for us to win from that situation with wickets falling regularly and scoring rate in leash. But, this time it was not to be and MCC scored the winning runs in the 20th overs of their innings and took the game away from us.
There was some pathetic umpiring in the centre but the game lost is game lost and our team is not a team that would like to blame somebody for our loss (though the 3rd party i.e umpires made a big dent on our performance and few decisions could have us ending on the winning podium).
Some things to take out of this match was the fighting spirit that our team showed inspite of some poor batting and not letting go till the last ball. We certainly need improvement in managing our resources in a better way and making sure that extras are curtailed (wides have been a factor everytime we have lost a match ) .
We are to a point where every match is a last match if lost and certainly we are not ready to go easy after such a long season.....

Thunders V/S Metro Tigers

Another step to supremecy in this season of cricket for Thunders. The thunders team won another match with convincing performances in all departments of the game namely Batting ,Bowling and most importantly fielding, which is helping this team to look like a professional unit.
Anand won the toss and elected to Bat on this nice ground which had history of high scoring games. Narendra was given a chance this time to Bat top of the order which he utilized to the optimum with a sparkling opening performance. Kruttik made the opponent bowling look easy with some beautiful shots although the Tigers had a decent attack and some wonderful ground fielding. The other batsmen chipped in and gave Thunders bowlers a decent total of 120 runs to defend.
The bowling department continued with impressive showing over the last few matches and kept full pressure on the Metro Tiger batsmen. There was some outstanding bowling effort by the team and every bowler performed his task as scripted for him.
Gaurav and Akshay did major damage with bowling superbly and wrapping up the Metro T innings for 76 runs giving THUNDERS another victory. Gaurav bowled 4-1-8-4 and Akshay had figures of 4-0-18-3 , taking wickets in almost every over and not giving away much.

The key this time in winning is the performance as a TEAM and not individual efforts.

All the best for Knock-Out stages, since you only have to lose once to go out.

Thunders V/S Mighty Indians

Going from Strength to Strength, Thunders went to the top of the League Table in WMCL 2009 with another comprehensive victory over the Mighty Indians. Things were little different from earlier matches since this time with Anand losing the toss, we were put to in to Bat by Mightly Indians and the task was now to put up a target, than chasing one.

Things started fine with Aditya and Prabhu giving a decent and steady start, and at that time it looked that we were heading for our set target of minimum 120 runs that the team had decided before the start of the innings. However things were slowed down in the middle overs and in the end Thunders could put up a Target of only 103 runs for the opponents, which was decent but 10-15 runs short of desirable one. Aditya played a wonderful knock of 27 runs, making sure that one end is secure till the end with able support from Prabhu, Kruttik, Akshay, Sachin and Kalyan from the other.

The bowling department lived up to the task and made a mountain of the target with getting regular wickets and making sure that the target is always out of reach from the Mighty Indians grasp with some controlled bowling. Krishna, Anand and Gaurav bowled great tight spells not giving easy runs and all the other bowlers chipped in with regular wickets keeping the opponents in constant pressure. By far this was the one of the best fielding efforts seen by the team on the ground with some lovely catches and fast ground coverage and returns. Thunders wrapped up the match in 13.5 overs making sure that there are no hiccups on the way.

Thunders v/s FCA

This 3rd win in the tournament against FCA has taken Thunders to the top of their Group A table.

The team resilience and the will to win fired up another win for our team which is surely playing as a unit this time and standing up for each other. An ordinary day in the field this time was levelled by the Batting Effort this time, which has been our most unpredictable area before now.

The bowling effort was led by Prabhu who took 4 wickets and supported well by ADitya, Anand and Kalyan with some good subtle changes to their line and length wrapping up the FCA batting. Fielding was ordinary on the ground with lot of misses and effort not as strong as was seen in the previous matches. FCA put up a decent total on the treacherous pitch which makes chasing a difficult task. However the thoughtful opening batting by Rahul and Prabhu took the team home without little sweat. Both Prabhu (34 n.o) and Rahul (26) took the opposition apart with Akshaye chipping in quickfire 20 in the end to finish this match in style with almost 8 overs to spare.

Lot of things to take home in this convincing win.....great effort team. !!!

Like Kalyan says for our team.....we are the 1992 Pak team. World beaters on one day and can be beaten by BanglaDesh on the other. This match though was on the downswing side. After Warrangers put up a modest total of 85 odd runs the thunders started blazingly well with Kalyan and Prabhu and cruising for a win with 56 runs in 8 overs without loss. But this was one face of the team as thunders could only score another 15 runs in the next 8 overs and were all out before the target could be achieved. The match was lost and should serve as an example

Thunders V/s Herndon Hawks

The thunders team performed and dominated the Depleted Herndon Hawks team that was put forward by the HH captain for a match in Reston Cricket Field. This match was full of experiments from both the teams in shuffling their playnig eleven and also their Bowling and Batting orders. Thunders bowling was to the point and with Kalyan and Anand bowling good the depth of bowling is quite impressive. Krishna bowled a very good spell and took crucial wickets keeping a check on his action and line and length. In batting front the match was taken to the end by Prabhu who played exceptionally well opening the innings and playing till last. Guru a new find in the team played and showed controlled batting making sure the match win is never out of sight. In the end another victory for the records.

Thunders V/S NOVA chargers

It was a cold morning and one can say the same thing about Thunders performance also on this day. The performance for this day was a mixed one with lacklustre show and some glimmer of brilliance. Kruttik shined with the bat and made good 46 runs, but could not do enough to take the team over the finish line since nobody else could support him from the other end. The match was played with a mixed bag efforts in all departments of the game and it showed in the end result with thunders on the losing end of rope. Fielding was ordinary something that needs to have a better look and so does the batting lineup which can be more flexible and experimental.
The only positive is that Rahul, who was the top scorer from NOVA (50+ runs) is a member of our roster also.
